Rare Diseases

 What are they?

Rare diseases are medical conditions that affect a small number of people compared to the general population. They are usually serious, chronic, and often debilitating diseases.

These conditions are usually progressive and disabling and can be degenerative and also lead to death, affecting the quality of life of people and their families. In addition, many of them have no cure, so treatment consists of clinical, physiotherapy, speech therapy, and psychotherapy, among others, to relieve symptoms or delay their onset.

A rare disease is considered to affect up to 65 people per 100,000 individuals or 1.3 people per 2,000 individuals. The exact number of rare diseases is not known. It's estimated that there are between 6,000 and 8,000 different types of rare diseases worldwide. Although they are individually rare, together they affect a significant percentage of the population, resulting in a significant health problem.

Another characteristic of rare diseases is that 80% of them are due to genetic factors, while the rest are due to environmental, infectious, and immunological causes, among others.

How They Can Be Treated?

Rare diseases have no cure (yet). However, adequate treatment is capable of reducing complications and symptoms, as well as preventing the disease from worsening and progressing.

The Ministry of Health is reviewing the drafting of Clinical Protocols and Therapeutic Guidelines (CPTG) for rare diseases, seeking to unify procedures in existing documents.

In addition, there are currently 36 CPTGS (Clinical Protocols and Therapeutic Guidelines) for rare diseases, which guide doctors, nurses, nursing technicians, and other health professionals on how to diagnose, treat and rehabilitate patients, as well as pharmaceutical assistance.
